The inventory is mainly based on industry data and is completed, where necessary, by secondary data. This data set is based on primary data from internationally adopted production processes, connected with regional precursor chains.0The data set represents the country specific situation in Sweden, focusing on the main technologies, the region specific characteristics and / or import statistics.Foreground system:
The information of this data set is based on the Rönnskär production facility in Sweden. The Rönnskär smelter in northern Sweden extracts base metals and precious metals from concentrates of copper and lead as well as from recycled materials. Copper, lead, precious metals, etc are extracted by using the best available technology. Within the Rönnskär operation, input materials from traditional mining process (from Boliden mines) as well as secondary raw materials are consumed. The non- ferrous metals are produced mainly through the traditional route from metal ores. These processes include roasting, electric and flash furnaces, anode casting as well as a refinery. Within the roasting process sulphur is removed from the input materials mainly from the concentrates. Within the electric furnace, the feed is separated in zinc-containing slag which is transferred to the fuming plant and in a matte, containing approximately 55 % copper along with iron, zinc, lead, precious metals, nickel and selenium is transferred to the converters. The flash furnace produces a matte from different concentrates which contains approximately 70 % copper, together with minor elements and precious metals. The matte is transferred to the converters by ladle. Within the converter iron, sulphide and other impurities are removed by oxidation. Resulting slag contains an amount of zinc and lead which is send back to the electric furnace. The produced blister copper with a grade of 97 % copper is send to the anode furnaces. Within this process anode copper (98% Cu) is produced which is cast into anodes. Within the electrolytic refinery copper cathodes are produced as final product. For the production of the precious metals a base metal is operated. Anode slimes from refinery, containing gold, silver, palladium and platinum together with impurities are pressure leached. From the solvent copper telluride and nickel sulphate is recovered. The leach residues are dried and after the addition of fluxes smelted by using the Kaldo technique. During smelting, selenium is recovered. The converted silver is cast into silver anodes. A high intensity electrolytic refining produces high purity silver and gold slimes. The gold slimes are leached and high purity gold as well as palladium/platinum sludge are precipitated. The silver is granulated and the gold is cast into bars or granulated.
Background system:
Electricity: Electricity is modelled according to the individual country-specific situations. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly, individual energy carrier specific power plants and plants for renewable energy sources are modelled according to the current national electricity grid mix. Modelling the electricity consumption mix includes transmission / distribution losses and the own use by energy producers (own consumption of power plants and "other" own consumption e.g. due to pumped storage hydro power etc.), as well as imported electricity. Secondly, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled as well as the share of electricity plants and combined heat and power plants (CHP). Thirdly, the country-specific energy carrier supply (share of imports and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific energy carrier properties (e.g. element and energy content) are accounted for. Fourthly, the exploration, mining/production, processing and transport processes of the energy carrier supply chains are modelled according to the specific situation of each electricity producing country. The different production and processing techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different energy producing countries are considered, e.g. different crude oil production technologies or different flaring rates at the oil platforms.
Thermal energy, process steam: The thermal energy and process steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to emission standards and considered energy carriers. The thermal energy and process steam are produced at heat plants. Efficiencies for thermal energy production are by definition 100% in relation to the corresponding energy carrier input. For process steam the efficiency ranges from 85%, 90% to 95%. The energy carriers used for the generation of thermal energy and process steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity above).
Transports: All relevant and known transport processes are included. Ocean-going and inland ship transport as well as rail, truck and pipeline transport of bulk commodities are considered.
Energy carriers: The energy carriers are modelled according to the specific supply situation (see electricity above).
Refinery products: Diesel fuel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, lubricants and residues such as bitumen are modelled with a parameterised country-specific refinery model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refining techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption, etc.) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific situation with the respective properties of the resources.Lead-concentrate-mixSand 0/2Sodium hydroxide (from chlorine-alkali electrolysis, diaphragm)Ammonia (NH3) production mix, without CO2 recovery (carbon dioxide emissions to air)Hard coal mixPetroleum coke at refineryHeavy fuel oil at refinery (1.0wt.% S)Limestone flour (CaCO3; dried)Limestone, crushed stone fines (Grain size 0/2) (EN15804 A1-A3)Thermal energy from natural gasThermal energy from light fuel oil (LFO)Electricity grid mixOxygen (gaseous)Lime (CaO; finelime) (EN15804 A1-A3)Process steam from natural gas 95%Inert matter (Steel) on landfillInert matter (Unspecific construction waste) on landfillHazardous waste (statistical average) (C rich, worst case scenario incl. landfill)Inert matter (Glass) on landfillMunicipal waste water treatment (sludge incineration)Sludge (high moisture)Sulphuric acid mix (96%)Lead is used as an alloying element, for radiation protection and for applications such as electronics and mechanical engineering.metals_silver.jpgLCI resultAttributionalNoneAllocation - market valueAllocation - net calorific valueAllocation - exergetic contentAllocation - massNot applicableForeground system: For the foreground system, allocation by 10 annual mean was applied.
Background system: For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, e.g. gypsum, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied.
For details please see the document "GaBi Databases Modelling Principles"Direct land use change: GHG emissions from direct LUC allocated to good/service for 20 years after the LUC occurs.
Carbon storage and delayed emissions: credits associated with temporary (carbon) storage or delayed emissions are not considered in the calculation of the Global Warming Potential impacts for the default impact categories.
Emissions off-setting: not included
Fossil and biogenic carbon emissions and removals: removals and emissions are modelled as follows: All GHG emissions from fossil fuels (including peat and limestone) are modelled consistently with the ILCD list of elementary flows. In the case that the emissions refer to the molecules CO2 and CH4, they are modelled as ‘carbon dioxide (fossil)’ and ‘methane (fossil)’. Biogenic uptake and emissions are modelled separately. For land use change, all carbon emissions and uptakes are inventoried separately for each of the elementary flows. Soil carbon accumulation (uptake) via improved agricultural management is excluded from the model.NoneGaBi Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Water Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Energy Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Refinery Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Agriculture Model DocumentationGaBi Land Use Change Model DocumentationCut-off rules for each unit process: Coverage of at least 95 % of mass and energy of the input and output flows, and 98 % of their environmental relevance (according to expert judgement).
For further details please see the document "GaBi Databases Modelling Principles"NoneData sources for the lead production are sufficiently consistent: the production mix distribution is based on the literature. LCI modelling is fully consistent. All relevant background data such as energy and auxiliary material are taken from the GaBi Databases, keeping consistency. It represents not the typical consumer mix of lead in Germany. On the German market about 70% secondary and 30% primary lead is consumed. The data set is created by using the technology of Imperial Smelting which normally used for high zinc containing concentrates and not typically for lead production. Considering the used technologies in this data set the environmental profile is applicable but with the background of the consumer market and to achieve decisions it should be treated with care because the secondary lead production would have a much lower environmental impact and might change the decision process. All relevant flows quantifiedAnthropogenic Abiotic Depletion Potential (AADP), TU BerlinCML2001 - Jan. 2016, Abiotic Depletion (ADP elements)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Abiotic Depletion (ADP fossil)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Acidification Potential (AP)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Eutrophication Potential (EP)CML2001 - Jan. 2016, Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity Pot.
