7d58be19-8741-48a2-8c43-d7fdf43f43c2Natural gas mixtechnology mixconsumption mix, to consumermedium pressure level (< 1 bar)Energy carriers and technologiesEnergetic raw materialsThe data set covers the entire supply chain of natural gas. This includes well drilling, natural gas production and processing as well as transportation via pipeline resp. LNG tanker. Main technologies such as conventional (primary, secondary, tertiary) and unconventional production (shale gas, tight gas, coal bed methane), both including parameters like energy consumption, transport distances, gas processing technologies are individually considered for each production country. All natural gas delivering countries, including domestic production, contribute by their corresponding shares (taken from national statistics) to the natural gas mix. The inventory is mainly based on secondary data.0The data set represents the national / regional consumption mix (supply mix) including domestic production and imports.Foreground system:
The country / region specific natural gas consumption mix, mix indigenous produced natural gas with imports of natural gas from the corresponding producing countries. The mix can be seen for a specific country / region as average natural gas consumed. The pie chart presented below represents the natural gas consumption mix.
For the natural gas transportation the following modelling is used:
Indigenous production: For national offshore production a pipeline transport between the gas field and the shore is considered. For national onshore production no specific pipeline is modelled.
Imports: Starting from an exporting country / region natural gas is either transported via pipeline directly to the border of the consumer country / region or as liquefied natural gas (LNG) via LNG vessels. In case of LNG transport, the natural gas is first transferred in pipelines to the next LNG terminal within the exporting countries, liquefied and then exported via LNG vessels to the destination country / region. In the LNG terminal of the destination country / region the LNG is regasified.
For the whole natural gas supply (indigenous production and imports), an average regional distribution (via pipeline) is estimated. This regional distribution averages the distance from the shore or onshore production site resp. the LNG terminal or border of long distance import pipeline to the consumer.
The data set considers the whole supply chain of natural gas, i.e. exploration, production, processing (e.g. desulphurisation) and in case of LNG import, liquefaction / regasification of LNG, the long distance transport and the regional transmission and distribution to the final consumer. Losses occurring during transportation via pipeline or vessel are included.
Background system:
Electricity: Electricity is modelled according to the individual country-specific situations. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly, individual energy carrier specific power plants and plants for renewable energy sources are modelled according to the current national electricity grid mix. Modelling the electricity consumption mix includes transmission / distribution losses and the own use by energy producers (own consumption of power plants and "other" own consumption e.g. due to pumped storage hydro power etc.), as well as imported electricity. Secondly, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled as well as the share of electricity plants and combined heat and power plants (CHP). Thirdly, the country-specific energy carrier supply (share of imports and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific energy carrier properties (e.g. element and energy content) are accounted for. Fourthly, the exploration, mining/production, processing and transport processes of the energy carrier supply chains are modelled according to the specific situation of each electricity producing country. The different production and processing techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different energy producing countries are considered, e.g. different crude oil production technologies or different flaring rates at the oil platforms.
Thermal energy, process steam: The thermal energy and process steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to emission standards and considered energy carriers. The thermal energy and process steam are produced at heat plants. Efficiencies for thermal energy production are by definition 100% in relation to the corresponding energy carrier input. For process steam the efficiency ranges from 85%, 90% to 95%. The energy carriers used for the generation of thermal energy and process steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity above).
Transports: All relevant and known transport processes are included. Ocean-going and inland ship transport as well as rail, truck and pipeline transport of bulk commodities are considered.
Energy carriers: The energy carriers are modelled according to the specific supply situation (see electricity above).
Refinery products: Diesel fuel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, lubricants and residues such as bitumen are modelled with a parameterised country-specific refinery model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refining techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption, etc.) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific situation with the respective properties of the resources.Supply of 1 kg natural gas to power plants and other final consumers.energy_natural_gas_supply.jpgenergy_natural_gas_mix_jp.jpgLCI resultAttributionalNoneAllocation - net calorific valueFor the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL) production allocation by net calorific value is applied.Direct land use change: GHG emissions from direct LUC allocated to good/service for 20 years after the LUC occurs.
Carbon storage and delayed emissions: credits associated with temporary (carbon) storage or delayed emissions are not considered in the calculation of the Global Warming Potential impacts for the default impact categories.
Emissions off-setting: not included
Fossil and biogenic carbon emissions and removals: removals and emissions are modelled as follows: All GHG emissions from fossil fuels (including peat and limestone) are modelled consistently with the ILCD list of elementary flows. In the case that the emissions refer to the molecules CO2 and CH4, they are modelled as ‘carbon dioxide (fossil)’ and ‘methane (fossil)’. Biogenic uptake and emissions are modelled separately. For land use change, all carbon emissions and uptakes are inventoried separately for each of the elementary flows. Soil carbon accumulation (uptake) via improved agricultural management is excluded from the model.NoneGaBi Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Water Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Agriculture Model DocumentationGaBi Land Use Change Model DocumentationGaBi Energy Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Refinery Modelling PrinciplesCut-off rules for each unit process: Coverage of at least 95% of mass and energy of the input and output flows, and 98% of their environmental relevance (according to expert judgment). The coverage of the exploration and well installation data (crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids) are only 90% of mass and energy and 95% of the environmental relevance (according to expert judgment). The data sources for the complete product system are sufficiently consistent: The data on the energy carrier supply chain are based on statistics with country / region-specific transport distances and energy carrier composition, as well as industry and literature data on the inventory of exploration, production and processing. Infrastructure data are from literature. LCI modelling is fully consistent.NoneIn terms of the country / region specific natural gas production, missing data of certain parameters has been used from countries with a comparable technology. Data measured at a group of representative production facilities have been used to represent the national production.NoneWater Management Technologies Used by Marcellus Shale Gas Producers, 2010Water-related Issues Associated with Gas Production in the Marcellus Shale, 2011Sustainable Water Management for Marcellus Shale Development, 2010Addressing the Environmental Risks from Shale Gas Development, 2010Evaluating the Environmental Implications of Hydraulic Fracturing, 2008Hydraulic Fracturing Research Study, 2010Federal Oil And Gas Leases - Opportunities Exist to Capture Vented and Flared Natural Gas, 2010Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry, 2010Reducing Methane Emissions During Completion Operations, 2007Hydraulic Fracturing Facts, 2011Hydraulic Fracturing Fact Sheet, 2011Handbook on Coal Bed Methane Produced Water: Management and Beneficial Use Alternatives, 2003Tight Gas in the Spotlight, 2001Natural Gas Production from Tight Gas Accumulations, 2011Coal Bed Methane Primer - New Source of Natural Gas – Environmental Implications, 2004Coal Bed Natural Gas Handbook, 2004Water Management Associated with Hydraulic Fracturing, 2010Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Marcellus Shale Gas, 2011Coalbed Methane: Principles and Practices, 2007Handbook on Best Management Practices and Mitigation Strategies for CBM in Powder River Basin, 2002Life Cycle GHG Inventory of Natural Gas Extraction, Delivery and Electricity Production, 2011Compendium of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Methodologies for the Oil and Gas Industry, 2009Hydraulic Fracturing Operations - Well Construction and Integrity Guidelines, 2009Technical Assistance for the SGEIS on the Oil, Gas and Solution Mining Regulatory Program, 2009Shale Gas: A Provisional Assessment of Climate Change and Environmental Impacts, 2011Modern Shale Gas Development in the United States: A Primer, 2009SGEIS on the Oil, Gas and Solution Mining Regulatory Program, 2011Methane and the Greenhouse-Gas Footprint of Natural Gas from Shale Formations, 2011Golden Rules for a Golden Age of Gas, 2012BP - Statistical Review of World Energy, 2011Vented and Flared Natural Gas, 2012Global Gas Flaring Estimates 2010, 2012OGP - Environmental performance in the E&P industry 2010, 2011OGJ - 2012 Worldwide EOR Survey, 2012Methods of making cyclododecatriene andErdgas und Erdöl in ZahlenErdgas und Erdöl in ZahlenEOR Survey 2008Environmental Report 2007Enhanced Oil Recovery by CO2 injectionEngineering Data BookDas Buch vom ErdölCrude Oil and Natural Gas Drilling ActivityComparison of North American and Imported Crude Oil Lifecycle GHG EmissionsCarbon Dioxide - Enhanced Oil RecoveryCalifornia Water Usage for Injection Purposes 2008BP Statistical Review of World EnergyAverage Depth of Crude Oil and Natural Gas WellsAnnual Report - Reserves, Resources and Availability of Energy Resources 2007Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis (ANP), Statistical data, 20052008 Annual Report of the State Oil & Gas SupervisorWorldwide Oil Production 2009Worldwide Gas Processing Survey 2008World's Largest N2-Generation PlantWorld Proved Reserves of Oil and Natural Gas, Most Recent EstimatesWorld Production Data on Natural Gas, Crude Oil and Natural Gas Plant LiquidsWorld Ports Distances CalculatorWorld Energy Outlook 2008Western European cross-country oil pipelines 30-year performance statisticsUK Production Data ReleaseThe Saudi Arabian Oil MiracleThe NPD Fact PagesThe Campos BasinStatistical Yearbook 2009Rohstoffmarkt im Umbruch und mit steigendem RecyclinganteilProject Information Sakhalin-1International Agency for Research on CancerNGDC/STP - Global Gas Flaring EstimatesLife Cycle Assessment Comparison of North American and Imported CrudesInternational Petroleum Encyclopedia 2009Geological Survey World Petroleum Assessment 2000Fuel Pathway Lifecycle Analysis for ULSD From California Crude And Refined In CaliforniaExploration Technologies - EOR Process DrawingsErdöl und Erdgas: Suchen, Fördern, VerarbeitenWorld Gas Processing Survey Summary 2008Methanemissionen durch den Einsatz von Gas in Deutschland von 1990 - 1997Estimating Methane Emissions from the Russian Natural Gas SectorUpstream of crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGL) and sulphur productionEU Reference Scenario 2016 - Energy, Transport and GHG Emissions - Trends to 2050Natural Gas Information 2018Shale gas prospects for Europe95.02008-2017noneThe data set can be used for all LCA/CF studies where natural gas is needed.
